5 Reasons Medical Marijuana Should Be Legal

Over the last couple of decades, the public conception about marijuana has changed tremendously. But now almost 29 states have legalized the use of medical marijuana, and nine states have also approved it for adult recreational use.

A recent survey done by Gallup, which is a management consultant company, found that 64 % of the respondents actually favored the legalization of marijuana. Apart from the recreational use, marijuana has a lot of medicinal benefits, and legalizing it, can be quite beneficial for the general public and the government.

Here, we have put together a list of some reasons why marijuana should be legalized.

  • Increase in Revenue for the State

Legalizing marijuana will raise a lot of revenue for state and federal governments. Legalizing marijuana will allow the government to tax it and improve the individual economy of states and the overall federal economy.

According to a report published by the data analytics firm named new frontier data in 2017, the immediate federal legalization of marijuana will lead to an estimated 131.8 billion dollars being collected as federal tax revenue up till 2025. This shows how much potential the legal marijuana market has and how beneficial it can be for the economy.

  • Reduces Law Enforcement Costs

Legalization of marijuana will not only increase the flow of revenue into the system, but it will also save a lot of revenue that flows out of the system. Legalization of marijuana will save a lot of revenue in law enforcement, incarceration and justice systems.

According to a report published by the American civil liberties union in 2013, about 3.6 billion dollars are spent annually by the federal government on marijuana enforcement. If cannabis is made legal, and it is removed from the list of controlled substances, not only will the money be saved in the law enforcement system but the justice system would not have to waste time and resources hearing cases involving marijuana, and lesser people will be incarcerated. It will also decrease the load on the incarceration system.

  • Legalizing Marijuana Will Make A Lot of New Jobs

The legalization of marijuana will open a whole new market, and it will create a lot of legitimate jobs for people. It will decrease unemployment and help a lot of people. It is estimated that the marijuana business has the potential to contribute hundreds of billions into the economy. If marijuana is legalized, you can contribute to the economy by simply smoking weed in your apartment.

  • Marijuana Has A Lot of Medicinal Benefits

Many recent pieces of research have proved the potential of marijuana in curing diseases like anxiety and depression. The pharmaceuticals that are prescribed to counter these problems are quite expensive, and they have a lot of unwanted side effects.

If marijuana is legalized, people will be able to cure these diseases by using medical marijuana and a lot of resources and time that is put into dealing with these diseases will be saved.

  • Marijuana Is Great for Athletes

Legalizing marijuana will also benefit many athletes because of the anti-inflammatory and pain reduction qualities of marijuana. Many athletes can’t use ordinary painkillers and antibiotics because they have to do frequent drug tests, but if marijuana is legalized, they can get pain relief organically without affecting the results of their dope tests.
